How to wreck a movie about an adventurous freedom fighter who hoodwinked the British and raised an army?

We are talking about an incredibly courageous, resourceful, resilient and patriotic individual who by defying stereotypes and conventions had a fall out with Gandhi(then at the zenith of his influence), gave the British the slip under house arrest in Calcutta, travelled to Peshawar in disguise ,travelled to Kabul, disguised himself as an Italian, met with Adolf Hitler , raised an Indian army from scratch ,fought the Allied powers against overwhelming odds, dealt with fractitious politics with the Axis powers who were ambivalent about him and participated in submarine warfare.
And his death remained an unresolved mystery for the next fifty years complete with near mystical sightings of him in Japan and Taiwan.

Surely you would assume about movie about his incredible individual would be something like Patton meets Das Boot and then some. But alas, the project fell into the hands of Shyam Benegal and as the result the feature is as exciting as a seminar on cost accounting.

If you don't believe me, see for yourself. Don't blame me if you fall asleep midway slamming your head on the laptop.

Why does Shyam Benegal create such dull movies? Well because he is a dullard Nehruvian himself. And this JNU/NFDC school inevitably present historical characters in their own image. Ponderous, pendantic and verbose.

Keep in mind Shyam Benegal was behind the low budget badly made Discovery of India series based on the book by "Pandit"(hahaha) Nehru.

Whether the characters were diverse as Rama, Krishna, Tipu Sultan(all portrayed by Salim Ghouse) , Alauddin Khilji, Chandragupta Maurya and Prithvi Raj Chauhan, all these dynamic personalities end up sounding like 80 year old Romila Thapar lecturing on Marxist economics...on a sick day.

First step to reclaiming our heritage is honoring our heroes(to be clear Tipu Sultan and Khilji are excluded) in the proper manner. And the first step is to prevent these chatterbox buddhaus and dhoortas from even uttering their name.

  1. "We are talking about an incredibly courageous...." -The portrayal couldn't have been any better YSV :) You have summed up a large chain of happenings in a single line :)
The link that you gave in the stereotype is also a very interesting one.

"Bose-the forgotten hero" was never meant to glorify a freedom-fighter's life.It had rather tried to denigrate Netaji. For example, even if I assume that Netaji had married Emily and fathered Anita, then also it is very strange that his sexual exploits are being openly highlighted in this movie.Whereas, movies featuring Gandhi,Nehru etc do not even think of touching their sex life, which is not even worth mentioning in this blog! And to some extent,I support this stance. As of now we stiil consider Gandhi "the father of the nation".Modi is so huge a fan of Gandhi that he will probably even bring a constitutional amendment in the future to permanently enshrine the name of Gandhi as the "father.." So if,in a movie,we show the sexual fantasies of Gandhi in testing his celibacy with his young grand daughter instead of his greater struggle with the British, soon a wave of dissent will start rising!

"First step to reclaiming our heritage...." - And this is the reason why the real heroes of India right from the ancient ages to the modern need to be respected and not exhumed by imaginary theories(ofcourse God's own country should remain untouched by such exhumation)!

Being a Nehruvian dullard,Benegal completely neglected a substantial and important part of Netaji's struggle against Gandhi, who had just become a roadblock to a mass uprising in the 1930s.Seeing this childish stubbornness of Gandhi to enforce Satyagraha and stop Netaji's attempts to start a 3rd mass civil disobedience movement , Vithalbhai Patel(elder brother of Sardar Patel) in utter disgust had branded Gandhiji as a "useless old furniture which is clogging the house."

  2. Personally I am not bothered by the Bose Shenkel angle but that's me. Maybe I am too "hollywodized" but it wouldn't even bother me if they showed them in bed. This is standard procedure in biopics. Of course you may disagree

However whats good for the goose is good for the gander. To be sure Attenborough and Benegal amongst others who made Gandhi films should have explored his "Experiments with truth" re Mano and Dhano!

I don't think it was a false flag operation for benegal to sabotage Bose ;-) , I do believe Benegal admires Bose but Benegal being a dhoorta and buddhau seems to imagine that most of his productive time involved sitting around and chatting LOLL

Vithalbais Patels quote is accurate and priceless. And it would that one Mr. Godse concurred!

    1. "This is standard procedure in biopics.....To be sure Attenborough and Benegal amongst others..." Yeah you are right in your first observation,I do agree with you :) The problem is that when it comes to movies on other freedom fighters, standards are set high even by Benegal himself, leave apart bollywood. You have rightly summed up "However whats good for the goose is good for the gander." I am reiterating that I don't care much for the Emily Schenkl angle of Netaji, apart from asking valid legal evidences and answers to some contradictions, which the govt of India has blissfully overlooked till now :) But even in case of Gandhi or Nehru I would not support bringing their personal sex lives to the screen in a naked way, particularly when the main theme of the film is freedom struggle.I agree with you that hollywood does differ here but remember Bollywood is inherently catering to the Indian psyche. And Benegal did know his limits in case of his Gandhi movie, who,BTW,had a far more spicy personal life than many others :) On similar lines,I would not like to see a movie in the far future on Modi's life and rise from chaiwala to PM ,where he is shown struggling with his wife on bed, failing to satisfy her and abandoning her :) But that's my opinion.Being raised in a relatively underdeveloped part of India, how can I think any better than this :) ?

"I don't think it was a false flag operation for benegal to sabotage Bose ;-) , I do believe Benegal admires Bose but Benegal being a dhoorta and buddhau seems to imagine that most of his productive time involved sitting around and chatting LOLL" - And I don't care what Benegal thinks about Netaji,as long as he doesnot make an idiotic movie like this :) Benegal should learn to make patriotic freedom movies first from other directors.A film worth mentioning here might be "The legend of Bhagat SIngh".If you have seen this movie then you would probably understand what I am trying to point. What he made out of Bose the forgotten hero is mostly garbage :)

    2. YSV,Anu last time when we discussed Shyam Benegal I forgot to mention this.Throw Benegal into the dustbin and watch this bengali movie on Netaji, when you have time. This movie was made in the 1960s.But the quality of dialogue and songs in this movie would put any tollywood movie to shame.

Link of the movie : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zTMRty2V144

Even if you don't watch the movie,do check out the songs atleast :)

Link to the songs of the movie :

      1 . Bango Amar Janani Amar : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0GR83XH_sTc
The above song is soaked deep with nationalism and pride for India.

YSV as you know sanskrit, you will also enjoy the sanskrit version of this song. The audio is a little disturbed but I could not find this sanskrit version elsewhere. The sanskrit name of the song is "Bharat mata stameva janani".Here's the link I could manage to find :

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4c_nbzzheks

Though I don't understand sanskrit, but I must say that this sanskrit version gave me goosebumps :) Sanskrit is definitely the language of the devas!

      2. Nahi Surjo Nahi Jyoti : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tEieUcZwBp4

The above song was composed by Swami Vivekananda and was one the favourite songs of Netaji.

      3. Taba charana nimne : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YIvf8omWgdo

This singer of this song was Manna Dey.

      4 . Ekbar Biday De Ma : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fw6zICOYbPA

This song has been sung by Lata Mangeshkar .The song commemorates the hanging of Khudiram Bose and is a tribute to the selfless patriotism even infront of the gallows.

This song has a separate wiki article also :

      5.Uthogo Bharato Lakshmi : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_iauKI24tSg

The above link contains a part of the song which was sung in the movie. If you are interested you can follow the whole song in the link below :

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XNKTXkqKmHg

YSV do not forget to give your (unbiased, sharp and categorical :) ) opinion on the songs :)

Atleast Benegal didn't tough Bhagat Singh's topic.Otherwise another patriot would have been transformed into Nehruvian Buddhau as YSV has defined :-P

    4. YSV the song "Nahi Surjo ..." by Vivekananda is deeply mystic in nature. The song is known as "The hymn of Samadhi" in English.I Vivekananda talked about his experience of "Nirvikalpa Samadhi" through this song. Here is the wiki link of the song :

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hymn_of_Samadhi

A part of the song goes as :

Lo! The sun is not, nor the comely moon,
All light extinct; in the great void of space
      Floats shadow-like the image-universe.

Here "All light extinct" allegorically signifies the transition of consciousness from Ajna to Sahashrar. As you proceed from the ocean of light of Ajna chakra into sahashrar, you will see a dark fathomless ocean or sky engulfing the light of Ajna chakra. This dark ocean(Sat of Sacchidananda Ishwar) is where Vishnu sleeps on SheshNag.The whole cosmic creation(consisting of millions of universes) is floating on this ocean .And when your consciousness enters the darkness, you will experience an unexplainable and unimaginable state of merging into the infinite which most people can only equate with loss of consciousness in deep sleep.Upto the Ajna chakra the experience of meditation can be expressed roughly in words, but the Sahashrar has to be felt.Because Sahashrar is the state of loss of individuality into the singularity. And as long as we have individuality,we can't imagine the state of singularity. This is the reason why Buddha remained silent on the nature of God,because it is not possible to explain .Some philosophies wrongly describe Buddha as atheist for this.
This dark ocean of Sahashrar is the "I am" of semitic religions or "So Hum" of Sanatan Dharma.

Ys rao is the product of 'behind the scene' affair that happened between street dog and her father (R)
street dog was a very attractive woman and a frequent visitor to fathers (ys rao ) residence. Her real husband was a homosexual and was not interested in . To make things further spicy, Rothschild had been widowed for a long time.
When she was four, there was a (JAM) friend In tiny little Indian village and she trusted him as much as she did my uncles. He was young (read: testosterone driven) and possibly curious. Let me say that he did not physically hurt me or force me. He didn't need to force me in jail
Now after many years both are now seen toghter where jam is real shamless husband in blog attempting to expose capt

  12. JAM , check out this nonsense by Justice Katju on Bose: Apparently he should be persona non grata in the pantheon of freedom fighters because he associated with fascists.
Some one should inform this dimwit on "sham dham dhand bhed" and that the Soviet Union was an ally the Nazis till their falling out.

    1. Yes I read Mr Katju's article and I am giving a step-wise counter to his baseless claims.Anyway I expect this from Mr Katju,as I have seen his inclination for the Nehruvian thoughts in his posts and comments. He doesnot engage with his readers so I won't put up this comment in his blog.It would be a futile attempt to do so.

"One cannot doubt the bravery and integrity of Subhash Chandra Bose." - This sounds similar to the starting line of Capt's post where he wrote : "I must state that Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose is the "King among patriots".Let this gruesome post NOT take away his sheen." Both Mr Katju and Capt have probably used such statements in the very beginning to dilute the criticism of their baseless analysis.Whenever they would encounter a hard line of counter-logic ,they would fall back to their initial starting statements as shields to divert the attack.

" However, the truth is that he became a collaborator with the Japanese imperialists and fascists in the Second World War, and for this he has to be condemned." -

Really Mr Katju? How much of history did you read on the 1940s freedom struggle of Azad Hind govt?Gandhi wouldn't allow Netaji to unleash a massive country-wide civil disobedience movement even with Ahimsa.Gandhi would stick to his lame satyagraha(and chastity tests),being lost in the utopian hope that Brits would be impressed at his zeal for truth (and celebacy).Netaji had become so influential a personality in the Indian psyche that he could have driven the Brits away even with a country-wide nonviolent movement at that time.Anyway coming to my point, what else could Netaji do other than taking initial foreign help from the axis powers?Mr Katju do you even know that Netaji firmly requested Hitler in their very first meeting that the derogatory remarks on India written by Hitler should be removed? just imagine the Hitler in his peak, who would go on to mercilessly slaughter jews later on.He was not exactly like Gandhi and Nehru whom you admire very much.Netaji had wanted to give a written legal document to the German govt that the financial help given by Germany in the initial setup of Azad Hind Govt would be his personal liability and he would try his level best to clear this in the future, after securing the independence of India. However the free govt of India of 1947 didn't acknowledge the financial help taken from Germany as it was given to Netaji(and not Gandhi's Satyagraha)! that Later when german forces attacked Soviet and were feeling demoralised after scouring through vast tracts of empty land in the bitter cold of Russia, the German Officers requested Netaji to give a patriotic speech on radio addressing the german soldiers in Soviet in German language(Netaji had learnt it by then),in order to lift their morals.Even the Germans had come to know by then the magnetic powers of Netaji's voice(I believe it was due to his Tantric sadhana and crystal patriotism)But Netaji firmly denied to serve any other nation apart from his own.And for your info,Netaji used Rome(as you mentioned Fascists) only for the diplomatic support to establish contacts with the erstwhile Soviet govt.

Now on the Japanese Imperialist issue,Mr Katju would you mind if I remind you that Netaji showed Japanese officials the exit door as soon as he took over the Azad hind Fauz?He clearly sent a diplomatic representation to Tojo at the very beginning that Japan should assist Azad HInd Govt only because Britain was a formidable enemy to deal with back then.Japan should not think of enjoying even an inch of land from India. So the Japanese hope of using Netaji as their tool was cut to size at the very beginning.

And after all this you brand him as a collaborator of fascists and Jap imperialists.

      (continued)

      Delete
    2. (continued)

" If he and his 'Azad Hind Fauj' had real independent strength........guerilla war.........empty gas." -

So Mr Katju let us have an experiment.I would put you in charge of 43000 soldiers(INA's final strength before disbanding) with only rifles and a few cannons, and I would push you up against a British army of a million head strength and armed with superior artillery and air-force.And I bet you will be the first person to run off, keeping your small but morally upright and brave army behind. If you ever read this in future,my request is that don't take this as ad hominem attack.I am trying to bring out the lameness of your strategic analysis.Netaji knew the limits of his army's strength. He did not want his brave soldiers to die like mosquitos infront of chemical spray.Actually when Netaji captured Imphal,he had hoped that Gandhi and Nehru would request the Indian soldiers fighting for Britain and the masses to rise up in complete revolt. But that didnot happen.Netaji had deep faith in the patriotism of Gandhi.Afterall he was the person who had called Gandhi as the father of the nation in 1941,even ignoring the fact that the father backstabbed him multiple times in the past.Netaji had neither served the Japs or fascists, nor did he allow them to aspire for getting a part of India as token gift.

He even cleared the major part of help taken from Japan financially through the funds of INA.As a result,Japan understood that their ambition of getting a share of India would remain unfulfilled. So they started reducing tactical and strategic help to Netaji. They didn't even supply a loudspeaker system to Netaji when he entered Imphal. The officers of Azad Hind Fauz were sure that a mere speech in loudspeaker by Netaji would have turned the Indians in British army to the side of INA,instead of fighting against them, such was the patriotism and appeal in Netaji's voice .But as it now stands, history has flown in a different way.

Mr Katju just for your info, that mass violence and revolt would have been more potent that mass nonviolence(Nehru-Gandhi ideological type) like mosquitos infront of spray, had been proven by the "Tamralipta Jatiya Sarkar" of Medinipur district of erstwhile Bengal in 1942.Most of the people of Medinipur district had become furious at being constantly and mercilessly subdued by Brit forces while following the lame Ahimsa of Quit India movement. So the common people, instead of nonviolent dharnas, took up arms(sticks, stones, mashals and also guns whenever available). They captured the police stations, barracks and govt offices.Seeing their patriotism, even the Indians working in police and army posted in the district turned against their British superiors .Medinipur district was the first part of India that got an independent govt way back in 1942 and the Brits couldn't properly oust the revolutionaries all the way upto 1947,even though the official structure of the Tamralipta govt was dismantled by the middle of 1944.They could kill a few revolutionaries and punish the errant Indian police constables at most, but how would they fight against the violent burning patriotism of the whole population of a large district?

Along with this I must say that you have displayed poor strategic vision.I am glad that you are not an army officer.Imphal was not a place where guerilla tactics could have been implemented. And Guerilla tactics worked better in the medieval ages when firepower wasn't very common or advantageous.Guerilla tactics with some rifles infront of a fully equipped force, more than 10 times stronger in manpower, with its own artillery, tanks and air power is like a lone pawn challenging the queen in chess.

"... The truth must be said...." -

Surely truth of this kind is the "Dhurta and Buddhau " type as YSV has defined in this passage :)
