Isnt "thambi" degrading to South Indian soldiers?

Soldiers of the Madras Regiment are apparently "affectionately" referred to as Thambis or little brother. A younger brother generally is not associated with courage, authority, fear and daring but mischief ,irresponsibility and charm.

It is odd that Madras Regiment is the oldest regiment established and yet they are considered "younger or little brother". Wouldnt "Anna" or big brother be more suitable. Anna is a term associated with respect and fear. South Indian gangsters in Mumbai were often called Anna. So much so that for a while it became a byword for a dangerous and thuggish individual.

"Thambi" is a thorughly patronizing term. Affection is for kittens and children , not hardened warriors who brave the sub Arctic temperatures of siachen and are disproportionately represented as brigadiers in Kashmir and else where.

But unless south Indians themselves  object to this term and prefer to continue dismissive treatment then nothing can be done.

  1. I think the gaslighting by North Indians (South Indians who object to their hegemony are instantly labeled separatists and anti-nationals) is working wonders. With the exception of a handful of Tamils, almost everyone else is literally shit scared of those labels and prefer to fall in line instead of confronting them over it.

Oh, wait I didn't know they were partisan hacks who just need a ruse to attack whom they consider their opponents. Of course that is to be expected in a democracy, but when a moron 10th fail gives interviews against NEET I can't help rolling my eyes.

Tamils formed a significant part of Azad Hind Fauz, not just the ex-BIA soldiers defected to the side of Netaji but even civilian volunteer tamilians who had enlisted in the INA back in those days, from the south east asian regions. And tamils were ruthless soldiers, either civilian volunteers or the BIA defected regiments.

And even in post indep india, tamil police have been feared like Yama Doot in different parts of north india, when their battalions were called in by central govt to control riot situations like the famous sikh massacre around delhi region in Indira gandhi assassination. Tamil police are known for their brutal tactics, lathicharging to death or multiple bone breaking , and no-nonsense approach to rioters.

Thus i would rather call a tamilian Anna than Thambi, out of my respect for this ancient population that developed a culture of its own ,independent of the indus saraswati influence _/\_ And not to forget, the latest pilot of mig21 ,abhinandan _/\_

    5. I heard that Madras police or Madras Regiment- not sure was deployed to Punjab in 1947 to 48 not just because they were less likely to take sides during the rioting but also their efficacy.

Thevars particularly joined INA in large numbers. They even funded him considerably providing lakhs and perhaps crores of rupees(imagine in those days currency). I think INA even sold bonds stating that these would be honored if India was freed. One guy from Madurai purchased quite a few of these , however the bonds were not honored by the post independence government. If they had he would have been a dollar billionaire.

While people here know how I feel about the police vis a vis the military, it has to be said there should some strict regulations about how police behave in interogation and lock ups. I dont judge them too much for their behavior in a hot situation such as a riot as they have to make quick decisions and not show weaknesses. However casual sexual abuse is rampant, female suspects are molested ,occasionaly raped, male suspects are violated with iron rods. Recently two men in Chennai died due to rectal bleeding after they were locked up just for not observing COVID protocols.
This type of behavior should not occur in a civilized society.

    6. Honestly, the way police behave with male suspects sounds a bit gay. Violating them with iron rods, forcing them to strip, acting out sado masochistic fantasies etc.

    7. I dont think it is anything sexual but is the result of a very stark power differential which is expressed in this vile manner. Usually the police officials who do this likely eat shit constantly from their superiors and they take it out on the incarcerated every chance they get.
Stripping is done even in American prisons ,partly to ensure the prisoner has no concealed weapons or other contraband. I endured this myself when I was locked up for drunk driving when I was about 22. Technically it was jail not prison so my experience wasnt too negative. I found most of the inmates to be rather friendly. I met a gentleman from Palau who was 19 if I recollect who was locked up for murder awaiting sentencing. I asked him if he actually commited the crime. He replied in the affirmative. Some gang related nonsense. What a tragedy , throwing away his life at that age for some petty vendetta.
I was also vaguely thrilled at having met an admitted murderer.
This was Seattle so there were lot more Korean inmates than blacks. But no shortage of the latter either even as the percentage of black population in the Pacific Northwest.
They were generally mild mannered. I remember a lot of middle aged men in there for failing to pay child support. The TV was set on a channel just showing Biblical movies and series.
My jail experience in Dubai was different with no strip searches whatsoever(those only reserved for drug and violent offender)- this time for driving with expired insurance ,got caught only because I got into a tussle with a guy who I didnt let overtake me illegaly. He turned out to be undercover CID lol. I did a lot of stupid shit when I was younger- I think we established this.
The only gay predator I came across was this Sikh truck driver in the DUbai jail who was very touchy feely with him. He was in there for stealing diesel.I put him in his place and I was out in a few hours -as was the case in Seattle.

    8. While its true that strip searches are conducted in American prisons, this is for genuine security reasons and done in privacy while preserving the dignity of the convict. In India however the cops make you strip to insult and humiliate you. I was once roaming around on my bike in my hometown during election season. The cops were conducting random stop and search along the way. One cop stopped me. I was rather polite with him which is what you'd do with authority. He was incensed that he couldn't book me for anything and finally pulled my shirt up on the pretext of "checking for contraband" . I reacted calmly, which disappointed him. Finally he had to send me on my way without booking me for anything.

Yes I saw this last time I was in India on Gemini TV. It is rather difficult to watch. If Tamil laborer can be treated so terribly in AP ,what to speak of say Bihari or other states. This is sadly the situation with many migrant workers across the country as they dont have ties to any of the organizations of their ethnic brethren.
The pretext I think was that they were loosely associated with another Tamil who into Naxalite activites, dont remember exactly. This is another reason I dont care for bhakts- they tend to fawn over a security state with its attendant draconian measures . NEver quite comprehending what it means. Ordinary people cheer encounters and consider encounter cops as heroes , never quite considering the implications of such actions. The justice meted out by the police is capricious and arbitrary. As your experience showed, tomorrow the state can declare a random innocent citizen a threat due to 1 or 2 degrees of seperation from a terrorist and give them the treatment.
This was portrayed chillingly in Black Friday, where a restauranter was roughed up, arrested and psychological terrorized(he was threatend with the rape of his wife by the police) if he didnt comply with their questions. In reality he didnt know anything. His sole "crime" was that one of the masterminds of the 1993 bomb blasts used to frequent his establishment.
In his frustration and trauma, the following he killed his wife and son and then shot himself. The police dismissed this as "these things happen" . BTW he was Hindu. But security state bhakts will justify pretty much anything. Sadly all this happened in real life.

The Azad hind govt couldn't honour it's bonds and treasury certifications ,but what happened to much of the funds like gold reserves ,post disappearance of Netaji, is till date a mystery . Recently a few rightwing blogs and portals tried to explore this arena of the lost Azad hind money ,but as usual their general allegation is too simplistic ,aimed at Nehru govt and quality of their historical research is too shallow to be taken seriously .

As for Netaji ,he had taken financial assistance from Germany and Japan on pledge of repayment by free Indian govt ,and as his personal obligation in case he lived on to lead independent India . He had paid up almost the whole of Japanese debt before his disappearance/demise,but the debt to Germany was not considered to be valid by post independence Indian govt ,the general notion prevailing that Netaji was a war criminal.

    12. I have heard conflicting reports about the monies. One version says that Netaji took it with him on the fated plane trip but another said that pilot gave him ultimatum- either some of the boxes with the bullion ,jewellry or one of his party(Habib ur Rahman) had to stay back. Netaji chose Habibur. In another version, Netaji took all of it onboard.
In the former the Japanese got recovered some of the burnt jewellry and bullion from the crash, what happened to the remaining boxes in unkonwn.
In the latter , there is no mention of gathering anything from the wreckage.

The context of that time doesnt seem to have favoured netaji taking the gold reserves on plane. his last words to INA officers was - 'Give me a categorical reply to my question-Should I or Should I not board the plane ? ' ,He was annoyed at the INA officers staying numb and silent on this question,no one was sure whether the plane itself was an original one from Govt of Japan or a decoy trap set for Netaji to hand him over to British. As time was running out and his officials were not being able to give a concrete reply to his question,Netaji chose to board the plane. His officials were silent more out of affection for him and in fear that any decision given by them could backfire and lead to assasination of Netaji, those were very troubled times, Japan had withdrawn the logistic support to INA in north east india. Thus he boarded the plane in an uncertain frame of decision and with no immediate major plan, most likely, unless there were hidden plans being drafted out by Netaji onboard the plane. So the chances that he took the gold with him doesnt seem likely,as he wasnt even sure of the plane itself in first place. However, the govt of Japan didnt have any major debts to be recovered from Azad Hind govt,Netaji had ensured payment of most of it few months before his disappearance. And he had made it clear that the running logistic support being given by japan to INA was in their interest, since INA was in effect fighting the enemy of Japan. Back in those days of ww2 and without any major backing except for a few revolutionary groups associations like those led by Rashbehari Bose etc,it seems Netaji had placed his terms and conditions to both the govts of germany and Japan pretty sternly and in no ambiguity, making it clear to all parties concerned that they had no rights or claims on future sovereign India, and any monetary assistance would remain the personal debt of Netaji himself,if he came out alive of the war and indep struggle. The strange thing is that he was fighting an uneven battle,i mean not just unequal, rather a battle where he didnt have a foothold to even stand on the arena in first place, yet he managed to build up a whole independent indian govt outside india, that was recognised by 9 sovereign nations of the world back in 1940s. His unapologetic and stern replies to the terror of Europe ,Hitler, sitting in Berlin ,has been recorded by Jan Kuhlman, his german translator, who often had to scale down the ferocity of Netaji's words while translating it to german top brass in meetings. Its sad that UN was yet to exist,or Azad Hind might have become the free govt of India by today's standards, where I think a total of 2 independent recognitions are required for a govt to be declared sovereign, though i am not sure of the legal complexity here. Personally speaking,I do think that the crash was preplanned or atleast spread as a rumour, even british military officers of that time didnt believe that Netaji had died, they were too well versed with his indomitable energy to know that he would attempt another resurrection once more, after the first INA effort failed apparently.

Much of the history might have been different but for one simple logistic supply that Japan couldnt givt in crucial time, back when INA had penetrated into Manipur, Netaji kept pleading the japanese military engg dept to supply him with a large loudspeaker system,he was sure that one speech by him would create defection in the BIA battalions standing against INA.

But for whatever reason, japanese officials couldnt/didnt supply a loudspeaker system at that crucial juncture. INA's plans were never to fight BIA till last man, rather to create defection in BIA and destroy the british admin structure, that they achieved somewhat,as the INA infiltration weakened british hold over large parts of india, and navy mutiny of 1946 which was inspired by INA ,sealed their fate.

I wonder what's going to be the impact of this(very low fertility among highly educated and successful people) in the next 2-3 generation ? -----

Most immediate impact ,I guess, would be the progressive dilution of already existing ethnic/cultural population groups in the landscape of global intellectual fields(like for example Tamil brahmins or Jews),with decreasing fertility rates of these segments :) btw not just Tamil brahmins or Jews ,I think more or less all the brahmin groups of South India ,telegu ,Kannada etc are high performers on the yields of intellect and thus the tfr of these population groups would tend to fall down. In contrast ,u may see the dominance of certain unrepresented population groups into these intellectual arenas, like for example I put my bets on the future Bihari society one or two generations from now ,they are progressing steadily with economic development and a newfound zeal for education& aspiration. Two generations from now ,who knows,u may see biharis in the global map ,hearing important science&tech ventures or organizations. Just my speculation though ,since Tim opened the doors of guesswork to two or three generations from now :D

Now all this I wrote keeping in mind many things and aspects of human civilization of earth going by present status quo . However deep in my mind,I feel things will not go or develop so smoothly like it did in the transition of 20th to 21st. Our upcoming generations are faced with many challenges ,some manifested and others a bit more esoteric but still potent enough nonetheless . Among the manifested challenges lie climate crisis (I don't mean just global warming but many other aspects like deforestation etc) ,blind capitalist traits leading to gross inequality of purchasing parity (not just one or two nations but of the world in general ) ,upcoming surge of automation and robotics making many a job redundant by first half of 21st century (I think for a large part of the population, farming will remain the only doable and employable job few decades from now ,courtesy automation) ,and keeping newer avenues of economic or noneconomic creativity alive . These questions will be faced by upcoming generations . The model of capitalism and pyramidal tendency or trickle down concepts will face severe challenges .

The esoteric aspect is about the inward aspiration of a human being at gaining supreme satisfaction. A human being cannot be inherently economic or rational 100% ,otherwise the rates of suicide and depression or mental disorders wouldn't run high in developed nations. This shows that materialism somewhere fails to satisfy the human being at personal or collective level. I don't think this current model of an Economic-only human civilization would continue unhindered ,as our minds have deeper layers of aspiration outside the realm of material domain ,countless seers and sages have been attesting to this fact since dawn of mankind. If u look at the philosophy of Tao ,the advanced spiritual ideas of bushmen and ancient Africans like concept of oldawan(African version of universal sentience ) ,and the vedantic or tantric theories of higher consciousness,or the south American mysticism,u will find the core points or ideas same ,even though there has been no geographical or physical transmission of these higher ideas ,thus we can assume that human beings everywhere on earth had stumbled upon some fundamental truths of a deep link and kind of an awakened state of nature . As unlikely as it may sound ,the future earth will have to sort out this fundamental aspect of life in all its depth and it's broader relation to existence . Otherwise just economic or social models or theories won't save us or build up a steady planetary civilizational base.

Thus I have gone fully into bodyweight exercises only,I am slowly increasing number of reps and planning to take the number to near insane levels like Hindu or Persian wrestling promotes, though that will take lots of time for me :) but what is Ur opinion on pure bodyweight Vs weight based training?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Bodyweight excercizes seem to increase bone density more than gym based weight training. This is my personal experience. I think people over emphasize muscle and curiously ignore role of bone mass and density in strength.
Exercizes like Rammurthi dand are excrutiating with even 20 reps. I know people who bench press upwards of 300 pounds can not even do 5 Rammurti dands.
This is not to say that the former are weaklings obviously but weight training is very compartmentalized for muscle groups.
Keep in mind though Hindu or Persian (or rather Turkish) wrestling also uses clubs. Weights make progressive overload easier.

Hindu pushups of all sorts fill me with a sense of well being which is probably due to the blood flow to various parts of the body associated with bhujangasana and adho mukhasvasna. It is comparabale to the runners high without wrecking ones knees.

Yeah u gave somewhat the exact perspective I guess, bodyweight workout brings strength through bone density ,tendon&ligament strengthening (in contrast to muscle hypertrophy as in weight lifting ). The base Hindu pushup is a highly under rated exercise . After a relatively higher number of repetitions ,u would find the face glowing from within ,maybe people with lighter skins won't notice much ,but I can distinctly feel the difference in my face skin as I am dark coloured . I guess more than other things,it has something to do with the yogic nature of this exercise ,and also this exercise being a part of nature as even in many other mammals adopting this posture for a body stretch ,most notably all cats, big or small. Also it's just my speculation, but probably the specific spinal alignment Hindu pushups make the body undergo ,is somewhat like an attunement with natural balance of the body . In contrast ,the more complex or tougher improvisations of Hindu pushups like ram moorthy or the other harder variants feel to be artificial . Though I think all the 10-12 higher variants of Hindu pushups need to be performed and mastered for all round body fitness and anti ageing effect ,but beyond ram moorthy/dive bomber it gets really harder ,I mean even one rep of it becomes tough to master in case of next 8-10 variants :D

Back in 1940s ,DC majumdar had compiled a voluminous book on Indian physical culture along with other wrestling practitioners of that time ,it was titled 'encyclopedia of Indian physical culture' or something like that. In the book it has been noted that Indian wrestlers of that time dominated European counterparts with ease in pro wrestling ,and probably one exercise of Hindu squats done in ultra high reps made all the difference . Now by ultra high I mean literally to thousands of reps per day ,something today's MMA or gymmers can't imagine ,as they would remain far more concerned about damaging their knees with such insanity of a number of baithaks :) but the book notes that probably this training in Hindu squats ,as repetitive or mundane as it may sound, gave the better edge to Indian wrestlers in grip and ground work that's required inside rings. I guess the concept of high rep bodyweight training got dropped off because people found it easier to train with weights instead ,also traditional wrestling declined for more mixed types of martial sports. But when it comes to raw strength ,nothing can outshine the ideas of a wrestlers workout of past times.

Gada/mace/club is no doubt used in Hindu persian Turkish wrestling or even ancient Chinese wrestling . But club swinging doesn't give a linear workout as compared to bench pressing ,and high rep Hindu pushups prepare the body for club workout . I think the concept of progressive overload by repetitive weight is a bit different from the idea of repetitive load by higher reps of bodyweight ,it's just that the latter takes hell lot more time, but probably it's best if u can fully train with Ur own natural weight .

    3. @Jam,

Could you elaborate what are the 10-12 higher variants of Hindu pushups or direct me to a video.

Tried Hindu squats twice (not many reps), ended up with meniscus tear both the times. From then stuck to normal squats.

    4. Siva

sad to know this happened to u . As a movement ,Hindu squats Inherenrtly are more natural than western squats ,which are the artificial impositions to be honest . The alignment of colon and internal organs also comes better in case of the full squats position as in Hindu squats . I guess u had an underlying knee issue ,thus Hindu squats harmed u ,otherwise the indic squats are specifically designed to be done in hundreds of reps daily,I mean not just the base Hindu squats but it's higher variants as well ,as taught in traditional akhadas. Swami Ramdev has documented it through his video lessons, just search '12 dands and 8 baithaks by swami Ramdev ' in YouTube. Btw even the classical or regular pushup is one variant of the 12 indic dands, however the hand position is transverse in this case and elbow bends at 90 degree to body ,corresponding to the regular pushup from Greek tradition where u keep elbows close to body and palm/hand position on mat is parallel to body line instead of transverse . Personally though in case of classic /regular pushups,I love the Greek or western variation more than the indic one.

Hindu squats touch everything the normal squat gives, and even beyond that Hindu squats give more of attunement than normal squats can. Infact these done in high reps can be an adequate replacement to long running ,which in itself is not a very healthy exercise as modern doctors and scientists are getting from their research (long running on a daily basis seems to hurt more than help ) .

U can do Hindu squats as the very first exercise of Ur routine ,it is a conditioner +stretcher in one flow + frees up the body for all other types of advanced squats or pushups or even yoga . However if it is leading to injury ,then no need to peruse it as in Ur case . Always give priority to what Ur body says . The reason why I am by principle against weight training is exactly this tendency of higher injury risks. I have seen friends who look like Sylvester Stallone but multiple back injuries or pains and even somewhat lack the natural functional fitness or strength. In general ,the more compound Ur movement ,better is Ur chance of benefiting by increasing number of reps,Hindu squats give on rhythmic compound movement to the whole body . Thus it frees Ur body up for more complex variants of exercises or yoga .

That is to be expected for a beginner. Even a person who does about 100 normal dands cannot manage more than 10 Rammurti dands at the first go.

Hanuman dands required considerable flexibility and agility. Do not attempt unless you achieve moderate level of fitness and mobility.

But a bit strange that u can do ram murti dand but not Hanuman dand yet, because ram murti (dive bomber ) is tougher than Hanuman (Hindu pushups ) ,or I guess u meant it in reverse nomenclature 😁😁

Anyway keep sticking to one exercise regimen ,and this base Hindu pushup or Hanuman dand done in sufficient reps gives almost all that a person needs from exercise, all round body fitness from legs to shoulders ,good functional strength and even running stamina (provided u stick to Hindu pushups to high enough reps ,like 300-350,most people don't take it to that many reps as they get frustrated midway ) ,and superb fitness of internal organs ,no cholesterol ,fat sugar etc . It's an all-round kind of exercise ,but u have to build it up to that many reps . And coupled with Hindu squats as the second exercise ,u really need nothing more from a general fitness perspective. Ofcourse u will need other specific exercises for other specialised goals or ambitions that u have wrt body development.

Aesthetically ,base Hindu pushups is better than ram murti variant ,particularly for higher reps . But mastering the ram murti is essential as a parameter of spinal or core strength .

    12. Sorry I guess u meant the 4th variant as Hanuman dand ,in some terminologies the first base Hindu pushup is itself called Hanuman pushup.

Yeah the 4th variant is tougher than dive bomber or ram murti .
