Manu Pillai's intellectual dishonesty on "Indic vs foreign"

Manu S. Pillai, one time right hand man of Shashi Tharoor is a very intelligent, erudite and knowledgable individual. He is the author of "Rebel Sultans" which offers a Richard Eatonesque glimpse into the cosmopolitan Deccan culture where religious differences seem to have lost their potency apart from occasional campaign rhetoric and appeal to religious figures for legitimacy.

However he made a very shallow, glib and throughly inappropriate comparision between Pallavas and Mughals when it came to the question of who is considered Indian and who is foreign.

He pointed that Nanthivarman, a Vietnamese prince as selected as the Pallava emperor because he descended from the offspring of a Pallava emperor and Cambodian queen (when Pallavas held political sway over those regions). So this individual who spoke no Tamil, Pali,Prakrit or Sanskrit ,with his non Indian features and customs was placed on the Pallava throne. Therefore ,asked Pillai, how can the Mughals be considered foreigners as well.

It is incredible that such a comparision was made. The Pallava prince though a foreigner was expected to propogate Indian culture and traditions. The Pallavas were after all great patrons of temples and literature. He did not implement Vietnamese customs but was a champion for what Pallavas were famed for.

While the Moghuls were self consciously Timurid , they considered themselves lords of Hindustan but not of Hindustan. One may say that they gradually forgot their Chagtai Turkic heritage. Yes they did but instead of replacing it with Indian heritage, they replaced it with Persian .They spoke Persian and promoted Persian culture and administration . When Shah Jahan reviled crude Turkic customs to a visiting Persian diplomat, the latter reminded him the emperor himself was a Turk.

Hence there is no comparision between the Pallavas having one foreign king and the Mughals who prided themselves on their foreign ancestry and Shah Jahan even depleting the treasury to fight Safavids over his ancestral homelands in Samarkand.

There is no shortage of countries having kings of non native origin but who accustomed themselves to the native culture and became champions of the same. George III was of German origin but conducted himself like an Englishman and despite the loss of American colonies , English power under his regime was on the rise. THe Glorious revolution placed a Dutch king on the English throne. This was done by English nobles themselves.

Catherine the Great of Russia was a German princess who didnt bother about her ancestry one bit and dedicated herself to Russian interests.

None of these templates can be applied to Mughals.

I can only deduce that Pillai is being dishonest in order to placate his audience- secularists in the Jaipur Literature Festival . And get more book deals and speaking engagements from the "respectable" type of people.

As much as secularists try to cover Islamic misdeeds and promote hollow secularist agenda with fancy books, pedigrees and glamour , basici logic and common sense such as above are always their downfall. You cannot dress up a crow as a peacock and expect people to beleive it.

  1. Sir, I have a doubt:

Do South Indians suffer from a severe case of inferiority complex w.r.t North Indians?

I mean, no one protests when New Delhi imposes rules that undermine the power of states. No one, Tamils included. I am not including Northeast India which has absolutely no choice but to follow New Delhi.

The only state opposing New Delhi's terrible policies every single time is Punjab. Everyone else meekly surrenders.

    2. I have no idea what you are talking about. The most spirited resistance towards the center irrespective of the part in power comes from TN. It is due to TN that Hindi has failed to gain traction as a national link language.

Punjab is objecting to a truly free market for wheat (which is perhaps what you are alluding to) because they have been effectively subsidized for so long by the central government.

    5. "The only state opposing New Delhi's terrible policies every single time is Punjab." ---@Carcinogeist, you are looking at it the wrong way, punjab is not protesting because it's some knight in shining armor resisting against an imperialist centre but because the jatt landlords of punjab , haryana and west UP have the most to lose if the new agricultural bill is implemented. They don't want entry of big players in the agriculture.

"they have been effectively subsidized for so long by the central government." ---- @YSV, subsidy and Minimum Support prices will remain.

With that being said, out of all the farming castes in north india, it's only the jatts who take to streets and protest against any agriculture related bill. Rest are passive folks.

Really ? My understanding was that opening up the wheat market to real competition effectively ended these.

    7. "My understanding was that opening up the wheat market to real competition effectively ended these." --- Of course, there is no way by which the govt. can keep track of each and every personal transaction between a farmer and a private player but since the mandis remain , if a farmer is not getting MSP or higher price for his produce from the private players then he can sell his produce in the govt. mandis at MSP.

As for subsidies, how can they end lol ? Agriculture can't survive without govt. subsidies. We have got way too many people involved here.

This is a terrifying thought. Though I would say the problem is a lot of farmers grow crops such as sugar for example take up a lot of water and hence subject to mercy of climate.

In drier regions such as the Deccan plateau they are better off farming millets than rice and sugar. Millets are far healthier anyway.

Perhaps these bills concentrate mostly on wheat and crops assoicated with Jat farmers. I doubt lychees are often addressed or else Kurmi farmers from Bihar would not hesitate to make their voices heard. Agriculture in north India is tilted towards Punjab and Haryana and these two states, Punjab in particular, had special dispensations since independence due to partition and refugees. This continues even as Punjab and Haryana are one of the most prosperous states in the country. The protests are by entitled people who want to maintain the status quo.

  2. Looks like it is only a matter of time before the Pasmanda uprising occurs and completely sidelines upper caste Muslims most of whom consider themselves Arabs, Turks, Iranians and whatnot.

Pasmandas (who are 85% of all Muslims in India) consider themselves Moolnivasis (ancient inhabitants of India). They say they are Moolnivasis first and Muslims later.

  3. Let us get to the facts:

    1. Revocation of Article 370 and bifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir: Sikhs protested for months. Tamils were absent. They did not even care.

    2. CAA/NPR/NRC: Sikhs protested and even supported the protesters. Tamils were again missing in action.

    3. UAPA: DMK supported the amendment of UAPA that turned it into the draconian monster it has become today. UAPA has been slapped on students and activists since its amendment last year. Sikhs OTOH continued to put up resistance to it.

As for the farm bills, that is arguably one of Modi's few positive reforms since 2014 but even that faces stringent opposition.

The Tamils you speak of lived in the 1950s and 1960s. They do not exist anymore. They are long dead. The Tamils of today, DMK included, are mere silhouettes of their forefathers at best.

Sikhs have become the new face of resistance. Rather they have taken back their position as the torchbearers of resistance.

    1. 1. Why shoud Tamils care? Sikhs are right next door and there are lot of Sikhs living in Kashmir.

      2. Why do you want Tamils to participate in this? This affects expatriate Punjabis but not Tamils.

      3. Sikhs are often targeted by UAPA due to the formers history with Khalistan movement. And there are still embers of the same in Punjab. I am not saying its justified. But simply stating that Sikhs are interest in protesting against it much more than Tamils.

All in all, you are quite confused. People in India generally resist for their self interests apart from of course emotionally charged incidents such as gang rapes or abuse of children which activates the masses.
There is no reason why Tamils should be involved in these. Sikhs were no where to be seen when Tamils were being slaughtered in Sri Lanka (oh actually there were in the IPKF and were busy raping Tamil women, is this the "resistance" you desire?) . Where are the Sikhs during the nuclear reactor protests?

"As for the farm bills, that is arguably one of Modi's few positive reforms since 2014 but even that faces stringent opposition."

Yes it faces from opposition from Sikhs which you suddenly taken a fancy to for some reason. They dont want their sweet heart deals with the central government they had since independence to end.
In the future, please gather your thoughts and post a coherent response.
