Does Aamir Khan plan to protest Chinese treatment of Uyghur Muslims?

Aamir Khan has become a target for Hindutvadis after his diatribe against the current administration with regard to its record on Muslims.

While it was a tad hysterical (he is after all a Bollywood actor), I suppose the Modi's record of dealing with minorities isnt exactly sparkling.

But then we have this situation going on in China

One million Muslims are being held right now in Chinese internment camps, according to estimates cited by the UN and U.S. officials. Former inmates—most of whom are Uighurs, a largely Muslim ethnic minority—have told reporters that over the course of an indoctrination process lasting several months, they were forced to renounce Islam, criticize their own Islamic beliefs and those of fellow inmates, and recite Communist Party propaganda songs for hours each day. There are media reports of inmates being forced to eat pork and drink alcohol, which are forbidden to Muslims, as well as reports of torture and death.

It is hard to believe that one million Muslims are held in internment camps. That number is probably inflated but then again Chinese are known for their economies of scale whether it is manufacturing, education, birthing people ,aborting people, killing people or now imprisoning people

This type of state oppression is beyond the most hardcore Hindutvadi's wildest dreams(Savarkar cheered Chinese trashing of Muslims as far back as 1947). Surely Aamir Khan will launch an all out media campaign against these blatant violations of the human rights of his brethren

oh wait...

Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan, fondly called Uncle Aamir in China, is undoubtedly the unimpeachable golden boy of the Middle Kingdom's box office. After his wrestling drama "Dangal" grossed a colossal $190 million less than a year ago, Khan’s current hit, "Secret Superstar," continued a strong showing in China for a third consecutive week.

Khan's fan base started growing with "3 Idiots," and according to China's Douban, a viewer-led movie-ranking website similar to IMDb, the film is the country's 12th favorite movie of all time.
Five years later, in 2014, Khan’s action drama "Dhoom 3" grossed $3.8 million, his 2015 satirical comedy "PK" raked in $20 million, and "Dangal" took in in $190 million at China’s box office.

Now of course I am expecting a strongly worded response from Girish Karnad, Prakash Raj and all the usual virtue signalers puffing their chests and patting themselves on the back for their courage, compassion and tolerance.

But I am especially interesting in Khan's response (or lack thereof) as he stands to lose a lot as we can see.

The Chinese are not known for embracing criticism whether dealing with their government in general ,Tibet or now Muslims. Just ask Richard Gere and Brad Pitt who starred in Red Corner and Seven Years in Tibet. There has been a blanket ban on Martin Scorsese's films for a while as he made Kundun.

Call me a cynic , but the star of 3 Idiots is no idiot and unlike the combative wrestler dad in Dangal,I suspect in this case he considers discretion the better part of valor. $100s of millions of dollars buys a lot of idealism these days

Just ask Hollywood producers of all those crap superhero movies who tamped down American patriotic themes to corner the Chinese market.

Aamir Khan held firm when Pakistan wished to do away with the Indian national anthem in Dangal and they relented in the end. It is only a matter of time before a film with patriotism in a militaristic tone set in the Himalayan border may come up. Will he stick to his guns then too

A reminder. In Pakistan Dangal could barely make a million $. In China....

  1. Sir,

The silver lining of it all is that Aamir Khan held his ground against Pakistan w.r.t the Indian national anthem at Dangal. Aside of that he's been a no-show w.r.t others.

Why Aamir Khan doesn't criticize China? Money.

This question should also be asked of Pakistan, which claims to protect Muslims worldwide (whatever that means), and all other Islamic Republics/Kingdoms. As far as I know, only one man RT Erdogan mentioned it last decade. Aside of that, nobody else seems to have battered an eyelid.

As for the rest, I doubt they can locate China on the world map, much less critique the Chinese govt.

superb post and valid points . The issue that u highlighted wrt Amir Khan can be extended to the global islamic apologist lobby in general. I am not seeing any org,be it media or national govts or even islamic intnl orgs criticise China. Wonder why they fear china so much.

Coming to China, since it is not a great fan of islam, cant the chinese govt just ban islam from their nation? this thing baffles me,regarding the chinese response to islam.because, last year I saw a pic from shanghai or beijing(l cant recall the exact chinese city),where muslims could be seen praying for their namaz by sitting on a major roadway in the city, and the city police was posted to cooperate with them, and see that no disturbance occurs :) the same chinese govt is giving uighur muslims a hard time.china has always been an enigmatic nation throughout history :)

YSV one request to u,please put up a post on ur assessment of Mahatma Gandhi as a leader in the pre independence era,as per ur time and convenience /\. it would be great to know ur view on this matter.Recently the gandhi jayanti passed, and i could see a hell lot of criticism and hatred for gandhiji flooding twitter. Gandhiji had his share of flaws ,no doubts, but does he deserve a ruthless bashing ?Interestingly,I came across this piece by Sitaram Goel on Mahatma Gandhi, and it seems pretty balanced to me.But I would love to know ur perspective on this matter. https://www.google.com/url?q=http://www.pragyata.com/mag/the-place-of-mahatma-gandhi-611&sa=D&source=hangouts&ust=1539266280161000&usg=AFQjCNHHGuuL4ylmtfrS_4TyxD9qwYosYQ

And one more thing to clarify from u :) Of late we can see a lot of bashing on islam and its ideas+concepts, like the quran ,its prophet etc. On this ,I was searching a bit in the internet,in proper places like quora or kialo, regarding the nature of the islamic nations across the world. It seems that not all muslim nations are exactly islamic or hardcore sharia type.many of them are quite progressive in their way of life and thinking. Atleast that is what i could decipher from the net, since I cant visit these nations to check it out anytime soon :P But what do u think on this issue? U will be the right person to address this, since u have seen quite a few nations closely.

    1. China are not banning Islam outright because they need oil and gas from the Middle East and also the Turkic republics like Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, etc.

From what I am seeing, I think Chinese governments and kings have always been intolerant of non Han/non Mandarin peoples and cultures whereas the general Chinese public is more open to them.

Gandhi was/is bashed for a reason. Why is he still the father of India? Why does India even need a father or a mother in the first place? Why can't we have a national guide like Guru Brihaspati or Shukracharya instead?

    2. When some unpleasant truths about some esteemed individual is hidden for too long, people start taking contrarian approaches and start bashing him left and right. I was never a fan of Gandhi but I see the logic and insight of his approach. But this insight itself would make hardcore nationalists quite uncomfortable- it is this: The British in India were so thoroughly entrenched that a violent revolt would end up in a brutal civil war as most Indians identified and benefitted from British rule and lacked the imagination to see themselves free from it. So most of India was perhaps not so much pro British but anti anti British.
The British were unknown in the hinterlands. My friends grandmother from TN had absolutely no idea that there was a British rule in India. She refused to beleive it. This was the disconnect of urban and rural idea which the railways couldnt quite bridge.
To Gandhi's credit he spread awareness of the same and showed urban india the misery of the rural folk (as example of which was his dress or rather lack thereof).
I would praise Gandhi for this, there is unfortunately no Gandhi to care about the rural folk today with the farmer suicides debts, indentured servitude and such.
Amitabh Bachchan to his credit paid off the debts of some 4000 farmers. Meanwhile Ambanis and Reddys are spending 100s of millions of dollars on their weddings. What a shame, what a disgrace. I know they have a right to spend their money as they wish, but that doesnt make it right.
I would normally launch into an anti Gandhi diatribe by now but thats not what was asked so I will desist

This is a disease of Indians to make leaders into familial figures such as anna, bhai, amma, chacha etc.
In the West the term Big Brother is considered abuse as its used for a government that is over intrusive as a nanny state interfering in personal lives and abusing their power
But India we welcome it. I think we should just drop the charade of democracy as slaves with votes is still a slave.

      Delete
    4. And yes, that disease was in full display everywhere. I remember seeing posters for Thalaivar (leader) for DMK's MK, Thalapathi (army general) for his son Stalin, Amma for ADMK's Jayalalithaa, Annai (mother) for Sonia Gandhi, Akka (elder sister) for Tamilisai (TN BJP President), etc., which made me ill.

But is the concept of a national guide a good one? If not Brihaspati or Shukracharya, Chanakya would do.

That would definitely be a good replacement for Father of the Nation, etc. Of that I'm sure.

Rural and urban India are worlds apart.

Just because a philosophy exists,it doesn't exist mean people will follow it. This is quite similar to how some people(islamists, liberals) use to cite manusmriti as something which was used as law code in "ancient india " for two thousand years but then fail to mention a single major kingdom whose law code was based on it.

lol, i was not aware of this.

" social laws of Hinduism will continue anyway" --- Exactly what 'social laws of hinduism' are you talking about JAM !! On one hand you have 'Hindus' of north and East India (by east i mean Bihar,Bengal,Assam and Orissa) abhor cousin marriage(hell, in the north people have been honor killed for marrying within the same village) while 'Hindoos' of south India do it anyways. Just see the National Family Health Survey-4 data on the percentage of consanguineous marriages. Just a few days ago i was told that Maadhava, the 14th-century commentator on the Parashara-Smrti argued for cross-cousin marriage by citing Vedic passages and customs. This cross-cousin marriage in South India happen both among both Brahmin and non-Brahmin groups.

By social laws of hinduism,I mean all laws,be it cousin marriage or otherwise, beef eating or otherwise, cow worship or otherwise. I mean to say that the laws might change every 100 metres or so,but whatever the laws be,people dont care about manusmriti.Heck, very few hindus have actually read the geeta in their mother languages, leave apart uncommon texts like manusmriti, which are not even discussed in public life, unless some org like ABVP suddenly chooses to give it some useless spotlight :P https://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/Delhi/abvp-burns-manusmriti-copies-in-jnu/article8330154.ece as u rightly pointed out, most hindus dont bother about manusmriti or even the unofficial holy book of hinduism, the Bhagwad geeta.I guess largescale lack of quality education and illiteracy might be the causes behind this.just like, most muslims in villages dont care to read the quran and frame their own independent opinion about whatever is written in their holy book. they simply and blindly follow the interpretations of the local imams. the problem here is the same,ie,lack of quality education and lack of the urge to explore with an inquisitive mind.

    4. "unless some org like ABVP suddenly chooses to give it some useless spotlight" --- Most people know about it only because it has been given so much spotlight. From what i hear there are possibly thousands(or even lakhs) of plays/manuscripts written in various languages still untranslated which could possibly give a better picture of local society in their respective eras but sadly for our intellectuals it all boils down to debating over how many litres of petrol is needed to burn manusmriti.

    5. "the unofficial holy book of hinduism, the Bhagwad geeta" --- Is the concept of Bhagwad Geeta being the 'holy book' of 'Hinduism' a colonial creation ? I am sure that prior to the colonial era no accused during trial would have said 'i swear by gita' lol.

    6. Gita as a holy book or rather New Testament (???!!!) of Hinduism was popularized by that thoroughly overrated Radhakrishnan, the former President. Man really I read his works on Hinduism which were so praised by the intellentsia. He is just terribly ignorant and horribly misinformed. The 20th century intellectuals whether Hindutva/pro Hindu or secular had incredibly flawed ideas of Hinduism and Indian history. This included Nehru, Savarkar, Golwalkar, Lokmanya Tilak(of Aryans from Arctic circle fame) or even that half mad woman Annie Besant.

Bhagvad Geeta in courts is an introduction either by British or Muslims- not sure . Both latter cultures swear by their respective holy books in court.

    7. Manusmriti, Kamasutra among the most prominent of obscure texts which have given undue importance by the British . The former in order to make sense of Indias social organization and the latter for prurient purposes( the so called prim and proper Victorians led the world in opium use and STDs)
It is obvious that no one took Manusmriti as a guide for an ideal society. It was cooked up by some Brahmins from Gujarat possibly in response to prove their bonafides as much of Gujarat was considered mleccha due to long Scythian rule. But these motivations are just speculation.

I would not mind if BJP had a mind to eliminate some of the more objectionable local customs such as uncle niece marriage and polygamy in southern India rather than their pet beef fetish.

But it is becoming clear to me that cows to many Hindutvas in the north are more important than humans. The resultant HDI shame is there for all to see.

Can you give a reference to the Vedic customs regarding cousin marriage? The Vedas mention many different customs and tradition including Central Asian and Middle Eastern.
Krishna and Subhadra could get away with it as royalty tends to get away with all sorts of behavior which the masses cant- to this day. In the past Egyptian and Persian royalty commited incest by which I mean brother sister ,mother son , father daughter marriages etc. The original Alif wa Laila(Arabian Nights) has the Persian king choose his daughter as his bride. Even the Persianized Shah Jahan made the move on his step daughter soon after Mumtaz croaked
By these standards cousin marriage is small potatoes but still frowned upon by Vedics. IMO with good reason as we know from genetics frequent inbreeding leads to deformities and health problems down the road.
Baudhayana oks cousin marriage for south Indians which I see as a compromise comparable to Roman Catholics in their conversion of Northern Europeans allowed them to retain many of their customs such as the Yuletide which yielded most of the Christmas customs such as the Christmas tree.

    10. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan? I mistook it for Nehru writing books on Hinduism.

I think those 19th/20th century Hindu intellectuals were misinformed because of centuries of Islamic and British oppression and trying to make their way back?

Regarding HDI shame of BJP states, well I guess that's what happens when the state focuses too much on trivial issues instead of infrastructure, investments, etc. I think they don't want to reform Hinduism but make it more rigid.

The way you describe Arab, Persian and other Middle Eastern royalties, basically you're telling us they were living like animals.

Al Pacino, Tom Cruise and Harrison Ford were the same.

Nowadays whether in India or U.S, such stars are rare as everything is about marketing, sales and ROI with sequels, special effects ruling the roost. If these can make money, why deal with high star salaries?

Satya Nadella is not a Brahmin , the Telugus of whom there are good deal in Silicon Valley are not Brahmins usually but Kammas and Reddys.
Sundar Pichai is Brahmin I believe.

Steve Sailer a popular nativist conservative blogger believes the next big U.S foreign policy obsession will not be in the Middle East but in the high altitue wastelands of Tibet as either Indians or Chinese will be the new technocracy replacing Jews and hence their obsession with the Middle East. While this argument is quite flawed(most AMerican Jews are secular and Israel is of rather distant concern, American evangelicals are fiercely pro Israel) it highlights how disproportionately Indian Americans are represented among the cultural and financial elites. Alas they are well represented in white collar crime as well- Rajat Gupta, Marthoma, Rajaratnam etc

Telugu non Brahmins dont much obsess over Brahmins as the situation was similar not to TN but SL Tamils where there were many Westernized non BRahmin elites such as Vellalas. Some Vellalas were even priests. Similarly in AP and TN, while caste system was pretty severe, Brahmins werent demonized as they were in TN as they never held as much power since Aurangzeb smashed the Golkanda Sultanate(where they pretty much ran the show in the administration and the military)

Being self employed and not very Brahminlike (eat meat and occasionally drink alcohol) I am not in danger of losing my job. Anyhow I am based in Canada as well as some dealings in UAE

    6. Depends on the job . Indians in Canada do well on average but you find more blue collar workers there especially Sikhs and also Tamils who work in security. But you have them in the upper echelons also
In U.S the Indian %age of population is very low (about 2%) but unlike Canada, there are a lot of high tech and high finance sectors which enable to earn high salaries , apart from the restaurant, hotel and other entrepreneurial pursuits.
Hence the median income of Indian Americans is the highest, higher than Jewish Americans.
Not the case in Canada I believe.

    7. America has a population of 300 million odd people whereas Canada has only 30 million. Naturally Indians will form a smaller percentage of USA.

I didn't know Indian Canadians were mostly blue collar workers and not the top notch like Indian Americans so I asked.

My relative was sifting through several horoscopes to get her daughter married and she told me that Indians earn more in America or the Gulf than in Canada, Singapore or Australia. That's why I got curious.

    8. IN the Arabian Gulf, UAE,KSA,Qatar etc, its not that Indians earn more but they save more due to zero taxation. But nowadays, the cost of living has become considerably higher. It is impossible to drive without getting a $100 fine atleast in a month.

Australia may be a large country but 90% is uninhabitated and desert. All the population resides in urban areas in the coast and the competition for jobs is insanely high. But if you get one you are set. But then again cost of living is high too especially rent
Singapore is basically a city state and hence similar to Australia in over supply of labor and low availability of jobs and land.

    9. Now I see why jobs in Australia, Singapore and Canada are so coveted. I kind of get what you're telling me and can vouch for the same.

    1. California is coasting off the vision and wisdom of its past administrators from more than 50 years. Since the 70s, since Ronald Reagan withdrew from the governership to run from President, it has been in a serious decline due hyper regulation (people are fined 100s of thousands of dollars for planting crops in their backyard) , enviro nuttiness( damming of many rivers and other projects were stopped to save some obscure fish), a misplaced sense of compassion(SF has many schemes to help the homeless and its weather attracts homeless from colder places)
      Not to mention illegal immigration.
There are actual two Californias- the land of Apple, Oracle , Google which is the San Jose /San Francisco area as well as Hollyood, Bel Air and Beverly Hills all of these along the coast enjoying pleasant climate and the interior regions where farmers and other blue collar folk are in desperate state.
The former voted for Hillary because they benefit from illegal immigration as they have low cost maids, cooks, and gardeners, the latter rural folk in the hinterland went for Trump as they suffer most from loss of jobs and crime. But since the concentration of population is on the coast, the state went for Hillary

Keep in mind California has Hipanics living there since 1600s , all of these went for Trump despite his less than flattering remarks about Mexico because they dont see themselves as Mexicans but Californians. FOr a short period it was fancied itself a Republic ala Texas, another Texas with large and ancient Hispanic population.

While California hyper regulates law abiding citizens, it does absolutely nothing about illegals in its midst and does not bother when they flagrantly violate the law. But often they are given university tuition at instate rates
( IN America, if you are out of state say a New Yorker wishing to study in california, the New Yorker even as a citizen pays a much high tuition rate for the first two years of college compared to a California resident. For an out of stater to achieve residence, he or she must reside for atleast 2 years)
They get driving licenses and are protected by sanctuary laws even if they are murderers

California is an extreme case but you have to a lesser extant in the entire "Left coast" ie the nutty leftist coastal states of Oregon and Washington (as well as Cali) and border states such as Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. But these states are mostly governed by Republicans and hence arent as kooky and shoddy as California.

      Delete
    2. That's just so sad sir. I mean, all these days I thought California was that land of milk and honey due to all the industries located there. I never knew those big guns were so irresponsible and abusing all the advantages and privileges their state and the US as a whole gave them. Maybe only people who suffer realize the true value of responsibility, as everywhere else, there as well.

I didn't know it was such a nightmare. When I saw videos and articles criticizing people shitting on the roads, I first couldn't believe it. But then it seems it's true. Public defecation is now a big problem there, especially in San Francisco.

I didn't know Ronald Reagan was from there. If only California had more Reagans...

In other words you're telling us Republicans are any day better than Democrats. But aren't Democrats the same ones who owned and favored the ownership of slaves in the past? How did they turn out to be the exact opposite of their past?

What are "sanctuary" laws? Are those illegals some sort of endangered species to be protected by "sanctuary" laws?

Aren't Hispanics/Latinos the same people born due to the rape of native American women by Spanish/Portuguese imperialists?

  8. The 'left coast' of the America's is actually fairly "conservative", in every sense of the word.

As far as blue collar vs white collar - after first generation, children of blue collar move up into white collar work rapidly - there is rapid progress socio-economically here in N. America, faster than any other part of the world I think - and lots of people create jobs by starting small family businesses which over time become large successful enterprises. Hard work plus smart work plus family values equals success in relatively short period of time. It is dharmic responsibility of overseas persons with origins in India to perfect India. Strong dharmic science based education must be available to every child. Ideally every child would have their own tutors for every subject, with parental supervision. Sports is a must - sound mind in sound body. Religion and spirituality together create enlightened citizens who are an asset to the world. Unjust wars of looting that prop up corrupt kaljug economics (welfare etc.) must be brought to an end once and for all. Neocolonialism is alive and well. Nominal freedom attained in 1947 - full freedom we await -
