Why is Indian YouTube so mediocre?
Short answer: Indians are a silly immature and intellectually uncurious people.
Long answer:
Even the videos by smart people such as say professors or professionals who wish to impart their knowledge in the sciences, engineering, economics , accountings or other fields are poorly communicated and produced compared to those in say U.S.
It is not a matter of language skills. The Indian English skills are acceptable. What matters is conveying the information in an effective, clear and concise manner. In general Indians fail at this. Which is why the Indian education system is generally terrible? It is as if it is intended to incomprehensible and inaccessible to students.
In mainstream Youtube, there are documentaries by non professional vloggers about say cathedrals, classical music, Christian iconography, economics of 17th century Holland, Neitzche and his effects on Nazism, the pecularities of various European and non European languages, film reviews and analysis of Kubrick, Kurasawa, Scorsese, Fincher among various other cerebral topics. Many of these have millions of views.
Where is the equivalent in India? Where is the analysis of Hindustani vs Carnatic . Why this raga is superior to the other. What does this kirtana mean? Why were Dravida style architectures on temples come to be the way they are. How did Shaivism affect Buddhism. What do various yantras mean and how do they map to dieties? Why are certain Vedic verses used for marriage and other for death, what is their significance and what are they intended to do? What were the commonality of the aesthetics of Vijayanagar and the Cholas? Why was Harsha able to acquire such as large empire in such as short amount on time? What was the extant of Mesopotamian culture and motifs on the Mauryas?
Ok, granted . I have eclectic interests and tastes . But so many, many Western peoples who are interested in knowledge for the sake of it. Indians claim to be very interested in their heritage but I see absolutely zero evidence on this on YouTube but certainly I will see the copy paste quotes from Mark Twain, Schopenhauer, Goethe et al about how wonderful India is. Back scratching and self masturbatory patriotism is what passes for intellectual advancement in India.
Also let us discuss the abysmal quality of amateur entertainment. It is just awful. Whether on facebook or youtube it is as if an overzealous and earnest 12 year has written and produced these videos .They go along the lines of- rich people bad poor people good, pretty girl spoiled ugly girl loyal, boyfriend who wants sex is a villain ,celibate boyfriend honorable.
I cant believe these are actual adults producing this tripe. Goes to show how infantile and completely shallow our thinking really is.
I am not going into the YouTube comments where any criticism of India by a foreigner is met with hysterical defensiveness bordering on insanity.
Quora used to attract a lot of intelligent and knowledgable people but it has got overrun by fanboys who worship IIT and lonely weirdos who dream of just talking to pretty girls. There is a popular sub reddit dedicated just to this sorry lot which provides much amusement.
I am sorry to say all this is actually a reflection of Indians in real life. Most Indians are not really interested in any that does not indulge their jaded appetites or their thirst for money or career advancement. Even in school those who read novels by Agathie Christie or other pulp writers just wanted everyone to know they were reading these rather than enjoying them for their own merits. I remember kids (including myself) memorizing arcane trivia such as the Prime Minister of Sweden in 1978 for the sole purpose of winning a quiz contest rather than a genuine interest in any particular topic. This disease has infected even Indian Americans where are they disproportionately represented in useless contests such as the Spelling Bee. Their time would be better served in the Boy or Girl Scouts assuming those also havent gone the trans route.
Life is too short to watch and promote such rubbish out of a misguided sense of patrotism. By all means the current government can consider me an anti national though unlike I am pro cultural. Unlike most in the administration I care about the heritage of India and can actually answer many of the YouTube video suggested titles. I am pretty sure Modi ,Shah, Irani and most people in the RSS and VHP cannot.
YouTube introduced new rules on December 10, 2019 which will make it hard for new and creative YouTubers to make money or even survive on that platform.
ReplyDeleteThat aside, I agree completely with your post. There is nothing of interest from the Indian side except funny meme videos and comedy talks. You have shown people a new way (which they should have done by themselves long ago) but I doubt if anyone will ever be interested in it.
I have a request: I intend to create a few videos and a course on climate science. I have plenty of material ready and I am ready to record my voice soon. I just need to arrange all the stuff.
This is my first attempt. I have no plan to show myself physically in the videos (I intend to use PowerPoint slides and copyright free videos and images instead), at least for now. I intend to release them as a course on Udemy for now, with a few preview videos on YouTube.
What can I do so that my videos reach a wider audience? I want to present all information as accurate and flawless as possible.

ReplyDeleteHow are u sir :) _/\_ it's pretty long time after which I am trying to participate regularly in this blog ,as always it's a treat to read through Ur posts and discussions.
As for Indian YouTube quality ,look no further than the recent 'binod' trending . Lesser said about Indian social media ,the better. And that apart ,Nowadays people would silence u with heavy doses of national+cultural pride ,to the extent that it's becoming hard to ask and seek neutral historical+sociological perspectives .thus of late I have stopped commenting in all platforms of social media except heavily personalised ones like one or two WhatsApp groups, else am running into frequent abuses for not conforming to the norms of blind chauvinism . Hollow pride without a base takes us nowhere . Indians may learn this the hard way ,as our economy is already a sinking boat and soon heat will be felt.
Nice to see you after a long Jam. hope you are well.
DeleteTHere are some good Indian workout youtubers instructing viewers on dands and baithaks. Best one of these is KarateTV a Keralite guy who explains workouts and Kalari stances in a funny and interesting manner.
Most of Indian history and culture channel comes from bhakt perspective however.
The best approach is to read a wide variety to books. Anyhow watching videos take up a lot of time, I prefer to read if similar material is available in print or online.

DeleteBtw on martial arts,my sister has just enrolled for a shotokan karate from a Japan karate association club of our town :) it seems shotokan is pretty much the only school that u can get in Ur vicinity , somehow it gained worldwide popularity ,and not for any wrong reasons though, unlike taekwondo or kungfu lineages, shotokan is simple and lethal ,not flashy or murky in katas :)
As for Indian history ,we seriously lack historicity even in our academic discourses ,what to speak of common history channels of YouTube . For example ,academics made gandhiji into one persistent mahatma ,long before YouTube or social media came into existence . However I am getting a feeling that India needs to move out of its preindependence era and focus on more important bits of history for the present ,like agricultural evolution since 1947 or such other arenas. Infact this upcoming generation of youth is getting disconnected from pre47 . Somehow I feel that we cannot keep longing for that static British past anymore ,our history discourse for the time being needs to get dynamic. Even our history shows post colonial symptoms.
